Which Skiathos Road Trip Is Worth Hiring a Car For?
Updated October 21, 2026 · 5 min read
The drive worth renting for is Skiathos Town to Koukounaries, then on to a quieter beach such as Mandraki. Koukounaries alone does not justify a car because the public bus serves it. The value comes from leaving the main south-coast corridor afterwards, choosing a quieter western beach and returning on your own schedule. Keep Lalaria for a boat day: the beach is accessible only by sea.
Start with the easy section
Leave Skiathos Town after breakfast and follow the main south-coast road west. The first part passes the established resort strip, so it is navigation rather than adventure. Make Koukounaries the first stop only if you want a morning swim or a reference point; it is organised, popular and connected by bus, which is precisely why it should not consume the whole rental day.
Confirm parking signs and access when you arrive instead of treating a patch of roadside ground as permission. In high season, an early start buys choice at the beach and avoids turning the route into a search for a space.
Continue where the car begins to earn its keep
From the Koukounaries area, continue to one of the quieter beaches away from the main road, choosing one destination rather than collecting names. Mandraki is the example here and Agistros the alternative if local access or wind makes Mandraki unattractive that day.
Road surfaces and access can change, particularly away from the main route. A compact car is easier to place than a large vehicle; it does not make every track suitable. If the rental agreement restricts unpaved-road use, obey that condition and walk the final section or choose another beach. Never assume a scooter or quad cancels the restriction.

Build the return around one useful stop
On the way back, stop once on the south coast rather than racing through several beaches. Agia Paraskevi or Troulos works as a late swim or meal stop and puts you back on the simple main road before evening. If wine is part of lunch, leave the car parked and use a taxi; the freedom of a rental does not improve a day when nobody should drive.
Do not add Lalaria to the map. It is reached only by sea and in calm conditions. A Lalaria, Kastro and Tsougria cruise is the correct tool for that shore, while the Skiathos beach guide separates road and boat choices.
When this route is not worth it
Skip the rental if you only want Koukounaries, dislike narrow approaches or plan to spend the day drinking at beach bars. Use the bus for the main corridor and choose a boat for the inaccessible coast. Our recommendation: rent a small car for one focused Koukounaries–Mandraki day, not as a substitute for every form of transport on Skiathos.
