Skiathos Car Hire: What Do Excess, Deposit and Desk Extras Mean?
Updated October 21, 2026 · 5 min read
Choose by the amount at risk and the money required at collection, not by the first daily rate. Open the Rental Conditions for the exact Skiathos offer and find the deposit, excess, included CDW, accepted payment card, fuel policy and driver fees before paying. No single figure is valid for every supplier or vehicle class, so this guide deliberately gives no invented “typical” deposit.
Excess and deposit are different
The excess is the part of a covered loss for which the rental contract may leave you responsible. CDW, or collision damage waiver, usually limits responsibility for specified collision damage; it is not a promise that every panel, tyre, key or incident is covered. Read the exclusions and the circumstances that can invalidate cover.
The deposit is security held or charged by the rental company. It may secure more than vehicle damage, including missing fuel, fines or contractual charges. A low excess does not necessarily mean a low deposit, and additional protection does not automatically remove the card hold.
Which card reaches the counter?
Check whose name must appear on the card, whether it must be a credit card and how much available limit it needs. The main driver, booking name and cardholder often need to match under the selected terms. A card that worked for online prepayment may still fail the supplier’s deposit rule at collection.
Save the conditions and voucher offline. Skiathos is an island arrival: discovering a card mismatch at the airport or port leaves fewer easy alternatives than finding it at home.
Read extras before the sales conversation
Separate necessary extras from optional protection. An additional driver, child seat, young-driver charge, one-way arrangement or out-of-hours collection can alter the total. The supplier sets the exact age rules and charges, so check the chosen offer rather than transferring conditions from another company.
Fuel policy deserves its own line. “Same to same” and “full to full” describe different return obligations; neither tells you the fuel level until the handover record does. Photograph the gauge and existing body damage when you collect the car, and make sure the written record agrees.

Broker protection and supplier cover
Protection sold by a comparison site can operate differently from cover sold by the rental company. In a reimbursement arrangement, the supplier may still take a deposit and charge you first after damage; you then claim with the required documents. Read who pays whom, which evidence is needed and what remains excluded. Do not describe either product as “full insurance” unless its terms genuinely say so.
A five-minute booking test
Make a short table for two offers: total payable, amount due at collection, deposit, excess, card type, fuel rule and extras you need. Reject an offer if a crucial amount is absent and the supplier will not clarify it in writing. Our recommendation is the clearest offer whose deposit and remaining liability you can comfortably meet, even when its displayed daily rate is not the lowest.
