Do You Need a Hire Car on Skiathos?
Updated October 21, 2026 · 5 min read
For most first-time visitors staying in Skiathos Town or along the south-coast bus route, the answer is no. The public bus serves the airport, port, town, Agia Paraskevi and Koukounaries, while boats cover the one famous beach no road reaches: Lalaria. Hire a car if your holiday is built around several quieter beaches, early starts or accommodation away from that corridor. Do not hire one merely for Koukounaries or a day in town.
When the bus is enough
The useful dividing line is not the length of your stay but where you sleep. From Skiathos Town, you can walk to the port, restaurants and the old streets, then use the south-coast bus for Vasilias, Achladies, Agia Paraskevi, Troulos and Koukounaries. The airport also has a bus connection. Current departures change with the season, so use the current timetable rather than planning around an old screenshot.
This arrangement suits a couple who want town evenings and organised beach days. It also suits a passenger arriving by ferry for one day: collecting, parking and returning a car consumes part of a short visit. A taxi is often the cleaner answer for one awkward journey outside the bus timetable.
When a car changes the holiday
A car becomes useful when you want to choose between Mandraki, Agistros, Aselinos or the north coast according to wind and mood, or when your villa is well away from a bus stop. It lets a family carry beach equipment without timing every move to a departure. For a stay split between town and remote beaches, hiring only for the middle days is often more sensible than keeping a parked car throughout.
Choose the smallest vehicle that fits the passengers and luggage. Skiathos has a straightforward surfaced spine on the south coast, but approaches to quieter beaches may be narrower or unpaved. A quad or scooter exposes everyone to sun and loose surfaces and gives little room for bags; it is not automatically the practical alternative to a compact car.
What a car cannot solve
Lalaria is accessible only by sea. Driving north does not produce a hidden road to the shore, so book a boat trip instead. In Skiathos Town, a car can also become luggage you have to park: confirm a space with your accommodation rather than assuming that “central” includes parking.
Decide from your actual week
Write down the places you genuinely intend to visit. If most are on the town–Koukounaries bus line, keep the car out of the budget. If three or more days depend on scattered beaches or a remote house, compare a compact car for those days. Families with a child seat should reserve the correct seat and have the supplier confirm it; do not rely on availability at the desk.
Before paying, read the selected offer’s fuel policy, deposit, excess, accepted card and additional-driver terms. Those conditions vary by supplier and vehicle class. Our recommendation: stay car-free for a town-and-south-coast holiday; rent a small car for a deliberately independent beach itinerary.
